Does immersive training count as off-the-job training for apprentices?
The rules name simulation generically rather than naming VR, which is the right way to think about it: evidence what the scenario teaches, not what it runs on.
What the rules say
The apprenticeship funding rules for 2026 to 2027 include simulation exercises in the list of eligible teaching of theory, alongside lectures, role playing, online learning and manufacturer training.
The old blanket 20% rule has gone. A published minimum hours volume applies per standard, and no programme may fall below 187 hours of evidenced delivery.
What still does not count
Training outside the apprentice's working hours, progress reviews, onboarding and on-programme testing remain ineligible however they are delivered.
How to evidence it
Map the scenario's decisions to the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the standard, then record attendance and attempt data the way you record any other taught delivery. Node XR records every learner decision against a competency map you define, which is usually what a funding audit wants to see.
