Low-fidelity simulation
Also known as low fidelity simulation · lo-fi simulation · low-tech simulation
Simulation that reproduces only the elements a learning objective needs, using simpler, lower-cost tools such as part-task trainers, role play, paper cases or tabletop exercises.
Low fidelity does not mean low value. For procedural skills, early-stage learners and rehearsing a sequence or a conversation, a simple setup can meet the objective with less cost, setup time and distraction than a fully equipped simulation suite.
The useful question is which aspects of realism the task depends on. A decision-making exercise may need realistic information and time pressure far more than a realistic body, which is why fidelity is best matched to the objective rather than maximised.
