How do we clean shared headsets between learners?

Headset hygiene is the step that quietly decides how many learners a headset estate can serve in a day.

The routine

A ten-step protocol published in Frontiers in Digital Health by a Western Sydney and University of Sydney team sets the pattern: hand hygiene first, discard disposable face pads, separate fresh wipes for the inner then the outer headset, detergent followed by an approved disinfectant, air dry, store sealed.

The design change worth making

Porous materials are the problem. Replace absorbent foam facial interfaces with silicone or disposable covers, and avoid Velcro straps where you can, because neither can be properly disinfected.

The time cost

Cleaning time multiplies across a cohort sharing a few headsets. Because every Node XR scenario also runs in a desktop browser and on phones and tablets, large groups can train without the hygiene bottleneck, with headsets reserved for the sessions that need them.
