Head-mounted display (HMD)

Also known as hmd · head mounted display · headset · head-worn display

A display worn on the head that places screens or see-through optics in front of the eyes; the technical term for a VR or AR headset.

HMDs include fully enclosed VR headsets, mixed reality headsets with passthrough cameras and lighter AR glasses. Key specifications include resolution, field of view, refresh rate, tracking method and whether the unit is standalone or tethered to a computer.

An HMD gives the strongest sense of presence but serves one person at a time and needs charging, cleaning and managing. Node XR runs on headsets in the browser via WebXR, and every scenario also runs in a desktop browser and on phones and tablets.
