OSCE
Also known as objective structured clinical examination · objective structured clinical exam · osces
An Objective Structured Clinical Examination: an assessment in which candidates rotate through timed stations, each testing a defined clinical skill against a structured marking scheme.
Stations might cover history taking, examination, communication or a practical procedure, often with a simulated patient or a manikin, and every candidate meets the same tasks and criteria. OSCEs are used across UK health professional education, and the NMC's test of competence for nurses and midwives trained outside the UK includes one.
Immersive scenarios can help students rehearse the structure and decision points of a station, but the examined skill is still demonstrated in person.
