End-point assessment (EPA)

Also known as epa · end point assessment · epao · end-point assessment organisation

The independent assessment at the end of an apprenticeship in England that tests whether the apprentice meets the knowledge, skills and behaviours in their apprenticeship standard.

It is normally carried out by an end-point assessment organisation independent of the employer and training provider, once the apprentice has passed through gateway. The assessment requirements for each standard set out the methods, such as observation, professional discussion, a project or a test.

Because the assessment is known in advance, providers use practice assessments to prepare apprentices. Immersive scenarios can rehearse workplace decisions before gateway, but the end-point assessment itself is conducted by the independent assessor.
